Gâw (ก็)

Gâw (ก็) has a few different uses — understand them by ear here. It starts the second half of an "if…" sentence, where English has no word at all; before a verb it means "too"; ก็ยัง is "even so, still"; and on its own at the front of a reply it is the Thai equivalent of opening with "well…".

1 หิวhungry…
ถ้าหิวก็กินได้เลยครับ
thâa hǐo gâw gin dâi loei khráp
If you're hungry, then just eat.
ถ้า/ thâa=ifหิว/ hǐo=hungryก็/ gâw=(then)กิน/ gin=eatได้เลย/ dâi loei=go aheadครับ/ khráp=polite(m)
Thai says ถ้า at the start and ก็ where the result begins — both halves, where English keeps only 'if'.
2 ก่อนearlier…
ถ้ารู้ก็จะได้มาก่อน
thâa rúu gâw jà dâi maa gàwn
If I had known, then I would have come earlier.
ถ้า/ thâa=ifรู้/ rúu=knowก็/ gâw=(then)จะ/ jà=(would)ได้/ dâi=get toมา/ maa=comeก่อน/ gàwn=first
The same ถ้า … ก็ works for what didn't happen: if I had known, I would have come earlier. Thai doesn't change the verbs; the situation tells you it's too late.
3 คนเดียวalone…
เขาไม่มาผมก็ไปคนเดียว
khǎo mâi maa phǒm gâw bpai khon diao
He didn't come, so I went alone.
เขา/ khǎo=he/she/theyไม่/ mâi=notมา/ maa=comeผม/ phǒm=Iก็/ gâw=(then)ไป/ bpai=goคนเดียว/ khon diao=alone
ก็ is the 'then' half of if-then, and Thai puts it at the front of the result, so it lands mid-sentence where English has nothing at all. Here there is no ถ้า — the ก็ alone carries it.
4 เหมือนกันtoo…
ฉันก็อยากไปเหมือนกันค่ะ
chǎn gâw yàak bpai mǔean-gan khâ
I want to go too.
ฉัน/ chǎn=Iก็/ gâw=(also)อยาก/ yàak=wantไป/ bpai=goเหมือนกัน/ mǔean-gan=tooค่ะ/ khâ=polite(f)
ก็ before the verb = 'also / too'. It is the same syllable as the if-then ก็; only its position in the sentence separates them.
5 พูดภาษาไทยspeaks Thai…
เขาก็พูดภาษาไทยได้ครับ
khǎo gâw phûut phaa-sǎa thai dâi khráp
She also speaks Thai.
เขา/ khǎo=he/she/theyก็/ gâw=(also)พูด/ phûut=speakภาษาไทย/ phaa-sǎa thai=Thaiได้/ dâi=canครับ/ khráp=polite(m)
6 ไม่รู้doesn't know…
เขาก็ไม่รู้
khǎo gâw mâi rúu
He doesn't know either.
เขา/ khǎo=he/she/theyก็/ gâw=(also)ไม่/ mâi=notรู้/ rúu=know
With a negative, English switches 'too' to 'either'. Thai keeps the same ก็: เขาก็ไม่รู้, he doesn't know either.
7 ลองtry…
ก็ยังอยากลองอยู่ดี
gâw yang yàak lawng yùu dii
Even so, I still want to try.
ก็/ gâw=(even so)ยัง/ yang=stillอยาก/ yàak=wantลอง/ lawng=tryอยู่ดี/ yùu dii=anyway
ก็ยัง = 'even so, still'. It gives the previous point its due and then goes ahead anyway.
8 ยากhard…
ยากก็ยังทำอยู่ดี
yâak gâw yang tham yùu dii
Even though it's hard, I'll still do it.
ยาก/ yâak=hardก็/ gâw=(even so)ยัง/ yang=stillทำ/ tham=doอยู่ดี/ yùu dii=anyway
The first half can be one word — ยาก, it's hard — and ก็ยัง turns against it. อยู่ดี at the end is 'anyway', ก็ยัง's usual partner.
9 ผิดwrong…
รู้ว่าผิดก็ยังทำ
rúu wâa phìt gâw yang tham
He knows it's wrong but still does it.
รู้/ rúu=knowว่า/ wâa=thatผิด/ phìt=wrongก็/ gâw=(even so)ยัง/ yang=stillทำ/ tham=do
ก็ยัง is enough on its own; อยู่ดี is extra weight, not a must.
10 ไม่แน่ใจnot sure…
ฉันก็ไม่แน่ใจค่ะ
chǎn gâw mâi nâae-jai khâ
Well, I'm not sure.
ฉัน/ chǎn=Iก็/ gâw=(well)ไม่/ mâi=notแน่ใจ/ nâae-jai=sure ("certain heart")ค่ะ/ khâ=polite(f)
⚠ The hardest use, and the commonest: a bare ก็ at the front softens the whole reply. It is closer to English 'well…' than to any dictionary meaning — a hedge, not a word.
11 แล้วแต่depends…
ก็แล้วแต่ครับ
gâw láaeo-dtàae khráp
Well, it depends.
ก็/ gâw=(well)แล้วแต่/ láaeo-dtàae=dependครับ/ khráp=polite(m)
ก็แล้วแต่ is a whole reply: 'well, it depends' — ก็ softens it, แล้วแต่ is 'depends'.
12 อย่างนั้นhow it is…
มันก็เป็นอย่างนั้นแหละ
man gâw bpen yàang nán làe
That's just how it is.
มัน/ man=itก็/ gâw=(just)เป็น/ bpen=beอย่าง/ yàang=wayนั้น/ nán=thatแหละ/ làe=(emphasis)
This ก็ is a shrug: it is what it is. With แหละ at the end it sounds settled — nothing more to say.
