Thailand is divided into four regions: North, South, Northeast and Central.

The four-region scheme (North, Northeast/Isan, Central, South) is the everyday one. An official six-region system splits off East and West, but in casual speech most Thais say 'four'.

Isan borders Laos — cross the Mekong and you're right there.

The Mekong forms much of the Thai–Lao border. Isan (the Northeast) and Laos share close ethnic, linguistic and culinary roots — the river divides a country, not really a culture.

Thailand's southernmost province shares a border with Malaysia.

Thailand has as many as 77 provinces — we've probably not even been to half of them yet.

ตั้ง before a number signals the speaker finds it a lot ('a whole 77'), the flip side of แค่ ('only'). เรา (rao) is 'we', and in casual speech can also mean 'I' — common among friends, especially women. พวกเรา (phûak rao) is 'we, all of us'.
ภาคเหนือเป็นภูเขาเยอะ อากาศก็เลยเย็นกว่าภาคอื่น

The North is very mountainous, so it's cooler than the other regions.

The Northeast is a plateau; in the dry season it gets very dry and hot.

Isan sits on the Khorat Plateau and is the driest, most drought-prone region — a recurring theme in its farming life and folk songs.

The Central region is a plain, so it can grow so much rice that it's become the country's rice bowl.

The flat Chao Phraya basin is Thailand's agricultural heartland; อู่ข้าวอู่น้ำ ('cradle of rice and water') is the stock phrase for it.
ภาคใต้เป็นแหลมยาว มีทะเลอยู่ทั้งสองข้าง

The South is a long peninsula with sea on both sides.

The South narrows into the Malay Peninsula — the Gulf of Thailand on the east, the Andaman Sea on the west, which is why it has beaches and islands on both coasts.

The East has both sea and factories — like Pattaya and Rayong.

The Eastern Seaboard is Thailand's industrial-and-resort belt: heavy industry and ports around Rayong, beach tourism at Pattaya.

The West borders Myanmar — lots of mountains and forest, not very crowded.

Bangkok is the capital — it's the most populous province in the country.

Bangkok is administered as a special province in its own right, far larger than any other — its dominance over the rest of the country is a constant theme in Thai life.

Chiang Mai is the biggest city in the North — Northerners just call it 'mueang' for short.

Once the seat of the Lanna kingdom, Chiang Mai is the North's hub; locals call it simply เมือง ('the city'), the way Lanna folk have always referred to their walled centre.

Big cities in Isan, such as Khon Kaen and Korat, have developed a lot lately.

Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima) is the gateway to Isan; Khon Kaen is its education and commercial centre. Both have grown fast as the region urbanises.

Hat Yai is a big trading city in the South — Malaysians like to cross over to shop.

Hat Yai, near the Malaysian border, is the deep South's commercial hub and a popular weekend shopping-and-food trip for Malaysians.

Each province is split into districts — my home's in a small one, far from the town centre.

A province divides into อำเภอ (districts), then ตำบล (subdistricts) and หมู่บ้าน (villages) — the standard rural address hierarchy. ตัวเมือง is the provincial town centre.

Thais place each other regionally by accent within a sentence or two; guessing someone's home region from their สำเนียง is common, friendly small talk. คุณ (khun) is the polite 'you' — put พวก (phûak, 'group') in front to make it plural: พวกคุณ (phûak khun) 'you (all)'.

เป็นคน + region ('a Northerner / Southerner / Isan person') is the everyday way to state where you're from; coming to Bangkok to study and staying for work is an extremely common life path.

Loads of Isan people come to work in Bangkok, then go home for Songkran.

Much of Bangkok's workforce migrated from Isan. At Songkran (Thai New Year, April) the city empties as millions head home — the country's biggest annual migration.

The Northern accent is widely heard as soft and 'cute' (น่ารัก); regional accents carry strong, mostly affectionate stereotypes.
