Romance & dating: Apps & first dates
Navigate the modern Thai dating scene with confidence. These lines cover being โสด (single), looking for คนที่ใช่ (the right one), and meeting through a แอปหาคู่ (dating app) — including ปัดขวา (swiping right), being left อ่านไม่ตอบ (read, no reply), and getting โดนเท (get ghosted). You'll also handle a นัดบอด (blind date) and a เดทแรก (first date), and the etiquette of who จ่าย (pays) or whether to หาร (split). All 24 sentences are recorded by native speakers and come with English translations and word-by-word notes, so the dating vocabulary sinks in by ear.

Friends (and family) playing matchmaker — จับคู่, "to pair people up" — is common and usually well-meant.
ไม่ต้องรีบหรอก ค่อยเป็นค่อยไปดีกว่า
mâi dtâwng rîip ràwk khôi-bpen-khôi-bpai dii gwàa
There's really no rush — let's take it slow.

เลือก / lûeak = choose คน / khon = person ที่ / thîi = who นิสัย / ní-sǎi = character ดี / dii = good ไว้ / wái = (keep) ก่อน / gàwn = first หน้าตา / nâa-dtaa = face เป็น / bpen = be เรื่องรอง / rûeang rawng = secondary
A common dating maxim: character (นิสัย) first, looks (หน้าตา) second.
เรารู้จักกันผ่านแอปหาคู่ค่ะ
rao rúu-jàk gan phàan áep hǎa khûu khâ
We got to know each other through a dating app.

Dating apps (แอปหาคู่) like Tinder are now a mainstream way Thais meet, especially in cities — though some still find meeting "naturally" more romantic. เรา (rao) is 'we', and in casual speech can also mean 'I' — common among friends, especially women. พวกเรา (phûak rao) is 'we, all of us'.

"อ่านแล้ว" refers to the read-receipt on LINE or Messenger — being left อ่านไม่ตอบ (read, no reply) is a recognised modern dating sting.
ปัดขวาไปเยอะ แต่พอเจอตัวจริงตรงปกน้อยมาก
bpàt khwǎa bpai yúh dtàae phaw juhr dtua jing dtrong bpòk nói mâak

sùan-dtua mâi khôi châwp hǎa faaen phàan áep yàak juhr bàaep tham-má-châat mâak gwàa

คิดมาก / khít mâak = overthink ไป / bpai = too ("go") เอง / eeng = oneself รึ / rúe = or เปล่า / bplàao = no เขา / khǎo = he น่าจะ / nâa jà = probably แค่ / khâae = just ยุ่ง / yûng = busy จริงๆ / jing-jing = really
คิดมาก — "to think too much" — is the everyday word for overthinking; …ไปเอง adds that you've talked yourself into it.
บางคู่อวดความหวานในโซเชียลทุกวันเลย

Tonight's our first date — I'm so excited.
คืนนี้ / khuuen-níi = tonight เป็น / bpen = be เดท / dèet = date แรก / râaek = first ของเรา / khǎwng rao = our ตื่นเต้น / dtùuen-dtên = excited จัง / jang = so เลย / loei = (emphasis)
เดท is the English loanword "date"; เดทแรก is a first date.
ออกเดทกันมาหลายครั้งแล้ว
àwk dèet gan maa lǎai khráng láaeo
We've been on quite a few dates now.
ออก / àwk = out เดท / dèet = date กัน / gan = (with each other) มา / maa = (up to now) หลาย / lǎai = many ครั้ง / khráng = time (classifier) แล้ว / láaeo = already
มา…แล้ว frames a span running up to now — "have been (and still are) dating."
เดทแรกผู้ชายมักจะเป็นคนจ่าย แต่เดี๋ยวนี้ก็แล้วแต่คู่
dèet râaek phûu-chaai mák jà bpen khon jàai dtàae dǐao-níi gâw láaeo-dtàae khûu

หาร = to split the bill evenly. เกรงใจ is the Thai instinct not to impose on others; "ไม่ต้องเกรงใจ" frees the other person from it — here, to split without feeling awkward.

sǎo níi bpai dèet khûu gàp phûean mǎi bpai gin mǔu grà-thá gan

เขาโกหกเรื่องอายุตั้งแต่แรก เลิกคุยดีกว่า
khǎo goo-hòk rûeang aa-yú dtâng-dtàae râaek lêrk khui dii gwàa

เขา / khǎo = he โกหก / goo-hòk = lie เรื่อง / rûeang = about ("matter") อายุ / aa-yú = age ตั้งแต่ / dtâng-dtàae = from แรก / râaek = first เลิก / lêrk = stop คุย / khui = talk ดี / dii = good กว่า / gwàa = more (than)
คุย ('talk') is the app-era stage word — มีคนคุยอยู่ means seeing someone before it's official, so เลิกคุย ends that early stage. Lying about your age on a profile is as classic a red flag in Thai as anywhere.
เพิ่งเดทกันครั้งเดียว ยังรู้จักกันแค่ผิวเผินครับ
phêrng dèet gan khráng diao yang rúu-jàk gan khâae phǐo-phěrn khráp
We've only been on one date — we still only know each other superficially.
