Thai has two ways of saying something was done to you, and the wrong one changes the story. โดน is the everyday spoken one and it carries a complaint — โดนปรับ, I got fined. ถูก is flat and formal, the language of news and notices. The proof they are not interchangeable is ถูกเลือก, “was chosen” — good news, where โดน would sound like being lumbered with it.
