Get around Bangkok by every kind of Thai transport — in Thai. This first transport topic covers the city's tangle of options: the บีทีเอส (BTS Skytrain), รถไฟใต้ดิน (MRT underground), buses from the ป้ายรถเมล์ (bus stop), plus the ตุ๊กตุ๊ก (tuk-tuk), วิน (motorbike-taxi rank), รถตู้ (minivan) and สองแถว (shared pickup). You'll learn to ask a taxi to turn on the มิเตอร์ (meter), top up a BTS card, and cope with รถติด (traffic jams). พี่ ('older sibling') is the friendly, polite way to address a taxi driver or anyone a bit older — no relation is meant. Other family words are used the same way: น้อง (náwng) younger sibling; ลุง (lung) uncle; ป้า (bpâa) aunt; น้า (náa) mother's younger sibling; ยาย (yaai) grandma; ตา (dtaa) grandpa. คุณ (khun) in front makes any of them more polite: คุณป้า (khun bpâa).

ตุ๊กตุ๊ก — the three-wheeled motorised taxi, named for its engine sound; fares are negotiated, not metered.

รถไฟใต้ดิน is Bangkok's underground metro (the MRT), a separate system from the BTS Skytrain — you tap out of one and into the other to change.

น้า (literally your mother's younger brother or sister) is a polite way to call a middle-aged stranger — a motorbike-taxi rider or driver here. It sounds warmer than ลุง, and no relation is meant.
