The four-region scheme (North, Northeast/Isan, Central, South) is the everyday one. An official six-region system splits off East and West, but in casual speech most Thais say 'four'.

อีสานอยู่ติดกับลาว ข้ามแม่น้ำโขงไปก็ถึงเลย
Isan borders Laos — cross the Mekong and you're right there.

The Mekong forms much of the Thai–Lao border. Isan (the Northeast) and Laos share close ethnic, linguistic and culinary roots — the river divides a country, not really a culture.

Thailand's southernmost province shares a border with Malaysia.
The Central region is a plain, which lets it grow so much rice it's the country's rice bowl.

The flat Chao Phraya basin is Thailand's agricultural heartland; อู่ข้าวอู่น้ำ ('cradle of rice and water') is the stock phrase for it.

The South is a long peninsula with sea on both sides.
The South narrows into the Malay Peninsula — the Gulf of Thailand on the east, the Andaman Sea on the west, which is why it has beaches and islands on both coasts.
Bangkok is the capital — it's the most populous province in the country.

Bangkok is administered as a special province in its own right, far larger than any other — its dominance over the rest of the country is a constant theme in Thai life.
Chiang Mai is the biggest city in the North — Northerners just call it 'mueang'.

Once the seat of the Lanna kingdom, Chiang Mai is the North's hub; locals call it simply เมือง ('the city'), the way Lanna folk have always referred to their walled centre.
Each province is split into districts — my home's in a small one, far from the town centre.

A province divides into อำเภอ (districts), then ตำบล (subdistricts) and หมู่บ้าน (villages) — the standard rural address hierarchy. ตัวเมือง is the provincial town centre.

Thais place each other regionally by accent within a sentence or two; guessing someone's home region from their สำเนียง is common, friendly small talk.

เป็นคน + region ('a Northerner / Southerner / Isan person') is the everyday way to state where you're from; coming to Bangkok to study and staying for work is an extremely common life path.
Much of Bangkok's workforce migrated from Isan. At Songkran (Thai New Year, April) the city empties as millions head home — the country's biggest annual migration.
