Thai geography: Dialects & climate

Talk about how the regions differ in Thai. This second part covers ภาษาถิ่น (dialects) — คำเมือง (the northern dialect), clipped southern speech, the central เหน่อ (country accent) — and each region's climate, from หนาว (cold) northern winters to the ลมมรสุม (monsoon winds) and ร้อนชื้น (hot and humid) south, then regional identity — รากเหง้า (roots), เอกลักษณ์ (identity) — and Bangkok life: the ศูนย์กลาง (centre) with its ค่าครองชีพ (cost of living). All 16 sentences are recorded by native speakers and come with English translations and word-by-word notes, so the regional differences stick by ear.

1 ภาษาถิ่นdialect…
คนอีสานพูดภาษาถิ่นกันเอง แต่พอคุยกับคนกรุงก็เปลี่ยนเป็นภาษากลาง
khon ii-sǎan phûut phaa-sǎa thìn gan-eeng dtàae phaw khui gàp khon grung gâw bplìan bpen phaa-sǎa glaang
Isan people speak their dialect among themselves, but switch to Central Thai when they talk to people from Bangkok.

Central Thai (ภาษากลาง) is the national standard taught in schools and used in media; most Thais are bilingual in it and their home dialect, switching freely depending on whom they're with.
2 คำเมืองNorthern dialect…
ภาษาเหนือเขาเรียกว่าคำเมือง ฟังเพราะดี แต่ผมฟังไม่ค่อยออก
phaa-sǎa nǔea khǎo rîak wâa kham-mueang fang phráw dii dtàae phǒm fang mâi khôi àwk
The Northern dialect is called 'kham mueang' — it sounds lovely but I can barely follow it.

คำเมือง ('city/Mueang speech') is the Northern Thai language, with its own historic Lanna script (ตัวเมือง). It's different enough from Central Thai that outsiders genuinely struggle to follow it.
3 ห้วนclipped…
คนใต้พูดเร็วและห้วน คนภาคอื่นบางทีฟังตามไม่ทัน
khon dtâi phûut reo láe hûan khon phâak ùuen baang-thii fang dtaam mâi than
Southerners speak fast and clipped — people from other regions sometimes can't keep up.

Southern Thai is known for being rapid and short-voweled, dropping syllables — even other Thais often can't follow it at full speed.
4 เหน่อtwang…
แถวสุพรรณเขาพูดเหน่อ ฟังแล้วรู้ทันทีว่ามาจากแถวนั้น
thǎaeo sù-phan khǎo phûut nùhr fang láaeo rúu than-thii wâa maa jàak thǎaeo nán
Around Suphanburi they have a twang — you can tell at once they're from there.
แถว/ thǎaeo=aroundสุพรรณ/ sù-phan=Suphanเขา/ khǎo=theyพูด/ phûut=speakเหน่อ/ nùhr=twangฟัง/ fang=listenแล้ว/ láaeo=(and so)รู้/ rúu=knowทันที/ than-thii=right awayว่า/ wâa=thatมา/ maa=comeจาก/ jàak=fromแถวนั้น/ thǎaeo nán=around there
เหน่อ is the distinctive drawled, sing-song tone of the Suphanburi/west-Central area — one of Thailand's most instantly recognisable and gently teased accents.
5 หนาวcold…
ช่วงนี้ทางเหนือหนาว จนต้องใส่เสื้อกันหนาว แต่ทางใต้ยังฝนตกทุกวัน
chûang-níi thaang nǔea nǎao jon dtâwng sài sûea gan nǎao dtàae thaang dtâi yang fǒn dtòk thúk wan
Right now it's so cold up north you need a jacket, while down south it still rains every day.

The regions are out of sync climatically: while the North has a genuine cool season (roughly Nov–Feb), the South, nearer the equator, stays warm and wet for much of the year.
6 ลมมรสุมmonsoon winds…
ภาคใต้มีฝนเกือบทั้งปี เพราะรับลมมรสุมจากทะเลทั้งสองฝั่ง
phâak-dtâi mii fǒn gùeap tháng bpii phráw ráp lom maw-rá-sǔm jàak thá-lee tháng sǎwng fàng
The South gets rain almost all year because it catches monsoon winds from the sea on both sides.

Because the peninsula has sea on both coasts, its two sides catch the southwest and northeast monsoons at different times — so somewhere in the South it's nearly always raining.
7 ทิ้งช่วงstay away…
หน้าแล้งที่อีสานแล้งจัด บางปีฝนทิ้งช่วงนาน จนน้ำไม่พอใช้
nâa-láaeng thîi ii-sǎan láaeng jàt baang bpii fǒn thíng chûang naan jon nám mâi phaw chái
In the dry season Isan is severely parched — some years the rains stay away so long there isn't enough water to go round.
หน้าแล้ง/ nâa-láaeng=dry seasonที่/ thîi=atอีสาน/ ii-sǎan=Isanแล้ง/ láaeng=dryจัด/ jàt=(intense)บาง/ baang=someปี/ bpii=yearฝนทิ้งช่วง/ fǒn thíng chûang=rains pauseนาน/ naan=longจน/ jon=so…that ("until")น้ำ/ nám=waterไม่/ mâi=notพอ/ phaw=enoughใช้/ chái=use
ฝนทิ้งช่วง — a long mid-season break in the rains — is a recurring crisis for Isan's rain-fed farms; water shortage is one of the region's defining hardships.
8 ร้อนชื้นhot and humid…
กรุงเทพร้อนชื้นเกือบทั้งปี แทบไม่มีหน้าหนาวให้รู้สึกหรอก
grung-thêep ráwn-chúuen gùeap tháng bpii thâaep mâi mii nâa-nǎao hâi rúu-sùek ràwk
Bangkok is hot and humid nearly all year — you hardly notice a cool season at all.
กรุงเทพ/ grung-thêep=Bangkokร้อน/ ráwn=hotชื้น/ chúuen=humidเกือบ/ gùeap=almostทั้ง/ tháng=allปี/ bpii=yearแทบ/ thâaep=almostไม่/ mâi=notมี/ mii=haveหน้าหนาว/ nâa-nǎao=cool seasonให้/ hâi=forรู้สึก/ rúu-sùek=feelหรอก/ ràwk=(softens a no)
Bangkok's brief 'cool season' is mild and short; locals half-joke that the city really only has hot, hotter, and rainy.
9 รากเหง้าroots…
ถึงจะมาอยู่เมืองนานแค่ไหน ผมก็ยังภูมิใจในรากเหง้าคนอีสานของตัวเอง
thǔeng jà maa yùu mueang naan khâae-nǎi phǒm gâw yang phuum-jai nai râak-ngâo khon ii-sǎan khǎwng dtua-eeng
However long I've lived in the city, I'm still proud of my own Isan roots.

Regional pride runs deep: people who've spent decades in Bangkok still strongly identify with their home region, and Isan identity in particular has grown more openly celebrated.
10 เอกลักษณ์identity…
แต่ละภาคมีเอกลักษณ์ของตัวเอง ทั้งภาษา อาหาร และวิถีชีวิตก็ต่างกัน
dtàae-lá phâak mii èek-gà-làk khǎwng dtua-eeng tháng phaa-sǎa aa-hǎan láe wí-thǐi chii-wít gâw dtàang gan

Northerners speak melodiously, with such a soft tone that many are charmed.

Isan folk are very easygoing — meet them once and they chat like you've known each other for ages.

Isan people have a strong reputation for warmth and informal friendliness — a regional self-image often contrasted with the cooler, busier feel of Bangkok.
13 กระจุกconcentrated…
งานดีๆ ส่วนใหญ่กระจุกอยู่ในกรุงเทพ คนต่างจังหวัดก็เลยต้องเข้ามาหางาน
ngaan dii-dii sùan-yài grà-jùk yùu nai grung-thêep khon dtàang-jang-wàt gâw loei dtâwng khâo maa hǎa ngaan
Most good jobs are concentrated in Bangkok, so people from the provinces have to come here to find work.

Bangkok's economic dominance pulls labour in from everywhere; the lack of well-paid work in the provinces is the main driver of internal migration.
14 ศูนย์กลางhub…
กรุงเทพเป็นศูนย์กลางเศรษฐกิจ เงินส่วนใหญ่ของประเทศหมุนเวียนอยู่ที่นี่

khâa-khrawng-chîip nai grung-thêep sǔung gwàa dtàang-jang-wàt mâak khâa châo hâwng yàang diao gâw phaaeng láaeo
The cost of living in Bangkok is much higher than in the provinces — rent alone is already expensive.

ต่างจังหวัด ('other provinces') is how Bangkokians refer to everywhere outside the capital — loosely, 'upcountry'. The cost-of-living gap between it and Bangkok is large.
16 ค่าใช้จ่ายcheaper…
อยู่ต่างจังหวัดชีวิตช้ากว่า ค่าใช้จ่ายก็น้อย อีกอย่างอากาศก็ดีกว่าในเมือง
yùu dtàang-jang-wàt chii-wít cháa gwàa khâa-chái-jàai gâw nói ìik yàang aa-gàat gâw dii gwàa nai mueang
