Thai has several ways of setting one fact against another — understand them by ear here. แม้ว่า, ถึงแม้ว่า and ทั้งที่ are "even though", with ทั้งที่ adding a note of disapproval; ถึง … ก็ is "even if" and ไม่ว่าจะ … ก็ is "no matter"; แต่ … ก็ is the everyday "but anyway", and … ก็จริง แต่ … is "true, but…"; อย่างไรก็ตาม is the "however" of writing and formal speech, and แต่ทว่า a heavier, literary one; and แม้แต่ shares its แม้ with all of them but means "not even".
