Even though, but & however

Thai has several ways of setting one fact against another — understand them by ear here. แม้ว่า, ถึงแม้ว่า and ทั้งที่ are "even though", with ทั้งที่ adding a note of disapproval; ถึง … ก็ is "even if" and ไม่ว่าจะ … ก็ is "no matter"; แต่ … ก็ is the everyday "but anyway", and … ก็จริง แต่ … is "true, but…"; อย่างไรก็ตาม is the "however" of writing and formal speech, and แต่ทว่า a heavier, literary one; and แม้แต่ shares its แม้ with all of them but means "not even".

máae wâa jà glai dtàae gâw khúm thîi jà bpai khráp

= 'even though'. ⚠ The ก็ in the second half is not optional: Thai says it twice where English says it once.

thǔeng máae wâa jà aa-yú nói dtàae gâw ráp-phìt-châwp mâak
Even though he's young, he's very responsible.
ถึงแม้ว่า/ thǔeng máae wâa=even thoughจะ/ jà=(might)อายุ/ aa-yú=ageน้อย/ nói=littleแต่/ dtàae=butก็/ gâw=(even so)รับผิดชอบ/ ráp-phìt-châwp=responsibleมาก/ mâak=very
ถึงแม้ว่า is the fuller version, and sounds slightly more formal. It works exactly the same way.
khǎo khàp rót tháng-thîi mao yùu
He drove the car despite being drunk.
เขา/ khǎo=he/she/theyขับ/ khàp=driveรถ/ rót=carทั้งที่/ tháng-thîi=even thoughเมา/ mao=drunkอยู่/ yùu=(ongoing)
ทั้งที่ = 'despite / even though', and unlike แม้ว่า it usually carries a note of disapproval: the speaker thinks the two halves should not go together.

khǎo gin núea tháng-thîi bàwk wâa bpen mang-sà-wí-rát khráp
He eats meat despite saying he's vegetarian.
เขา/ khǎo=he/she/theyกิน/ gin=eatเนื้อ/ núea=meatทั้งที่/ tháng-thîi=even thoughบอก/ bàwk=tellว่า/ wâa=thatเป็น/ bpen=beมังสวิรัติ/ mang-sà-wí-rát=vegetarianครับ/ khráp=polite(m)

ถึง/ thǔeng=even ifแพง/ phaaeng=expensiveก็/ gâw=(even so)ยัง/ yang=stillจะ/ jà=willซื้อ/ súue=buyอยู่ดี/ yùu dii=anyway
ก็ is the 'even if' twin — same shape, but what it allows is only a possibility, not something already true.
6 ใครwho…
mâi wâa khrai jà phûut gâw mâi chûea
No matter who says it, I don't believe it.
ไม่ว่า/ mâi wâa=no matterใคร/ khrai=whoจะ/ jà=(might)พูด/ phûut=sayก็/ gâw=(then)ไม่/ mâi=notเชื่อ/ chûea=believe
= 'no matter…'. ⚠ The question word inside it (ใคร, ที่ไหน, อะไร) is NOT asking anything — it becomes 'whoever', 'wherever', 'whatever'.

mâi wâa jà gèrt à-rai khûen gâw yàa tháw

He didn't even say goodbye.
เขา/ khǎo=he/she/theyไม่ได้/ mâi dâi=didn'tแม้แต่/ máae dtàae=evenจะ/ jà=(would)บอกลา/ bàwk laa=say goodbye
⚠ แม้แต่ shares its แม้ with แม้ว่า and does something else entirely: 'even', as in 'not even'. It needs no partner clause, and it is not a concession.
khǎo ngîap dtàae gâw sǎng-gèet gèng
He's quiet but very observant.
เขา/ khǎo=he/she/theyเงียบ/ ngîap=quietแต่/ dtàae=butก็/ gâw=(even so)สังเกต/ sǎng-gèet=noticeเก่ง/ gèng=skilled
ก็ … is the everyday 'but'. Thai puts a word in each half, and the ก็ is what makes it 'but anyway' rather than a flat 'but'.
chii-wít nai mueang sà-dùak gâw jing dtàae khwaam-sǎm-phan rá-wàang khon hàang-hěrn
City life is convenient, true, but relationships between people are distant.
ชีวิต/ chii-wít=lifeใน/ nai=inเมือง/ mueang=cityสะดวก/ sà-dùak=convenientก็จริง/ gâw jing=true enoughแต่/ dtàae=butความสัมพันธ์/ khwaam-sǎm-phan=relationshipระหว่าง/ rá-wàang=betweenคน/ khon=personห่างเหิน/ hàang-hěrn=distant
X ก็จริง แต่ Y is “X, true, but Y”: you grant the first point, then turn against it. ก็จริง says “that's true enough”; แต่ brings in the objection.

phǎaen dii yàang-rai gâw dtaam wee-laa mâi màw khráp

แผน/ phǎaen=planดี/ dii=goodอย่างไรก็ตาม/ yàang-rai gâw dtaam=howeverเวลา/ wee-laa=timeไม่/ mâi=notเหมาะ/ màw=suitableครับ/ khráp=polite(m)
อย่างไรก็ตาม = 'however / nevertheless', and you meet it in writing and formal speech rather than conversation. It opens a sentence of its own rather than joining two.
raa-khaa sǔung dtàae thá-wâa khun-ná-phâap dii-yîam khâ
The price is high, but the quality is exceptional.
ราคา/ raa-khaa=priceสูง/ sǔung=highแต่ทว่า/ dtàae thá-wâa=but (literary)คุณภาพ/ khun-ná-phâap=qualityดีเยี่ยม/ dii-yîam=exceptionalค่ะ/ khâ=polite(f)
แต่ทว่า is the more literary 'but' — heavier than a plain แต่.
