Loei (เลย)

เลย turns up constantly and means something different almost every time. Its root sense is going past a point, and the rest follow from that: after a verb it hands over permission — กินเลย, go ahead and eat; wrapped in ไม่ … เลย it means not at all; in directions it means carry on, don't stop; and on the end of a remark it turns it up — สูงมากเลย, really tall. Learn the root and they stop looking like separate words.

1 กินeat…
กินเลยไม่ต้องรอครับ
gin loei mâi dtâwng raw khráp
Go ahead and eat — no need to wait.
กิน/ gin=eatเลย/ loei=(go ahead)ไม่/ mâi=notต้อง/ dtâwng=have toรอ/ raw=waitครับ/ khráp=polite(m)
เลย after a verb = go ahead, do it now. It hands over permission and clears away the hesitation — กินเลย is 'just eat', not 'eat later'.
2 ถามask…
ถามเลยค่ะไม่ต้องเกรงใจ
thǎam loei khâ mâi dtâwng greeng-jai
Just ask — don't feel awkward about it.
ถาม/ thǎam=askเลย/ loei=(go ahead)ค่ะ/ khâ=polite(f)ไม่/ mâi=notต้อง/ dtâwng=have toเกรงใจ/ greeng-jai=feel awkward imposing
ไม่ต้องเกรงใจ, 'don't worry about imposing', often follows a go-ahead เลย: it clears away the last bit of hesitation.
3 เข้าใจunderstand…
ไม่เข้าใจเลยครับ
mâi khâo-jai loei khráp
I don't understand at all.
ไม่/ mâi=notเข้าใจ/ khâo-jai=understand ("enter the heart")เลย/ loei=(at all)ครับ/ khráp=polite(m)
⚠ Wrapped in ไม่ … เลย it flips to 'not at all'. Same word, opposite job — the เลย is what makes the negative absolute rather than partial.
4 ลูกค้าcustomer…
วันนี้ไม่มีลูกค้าเลยค่ะ
wan-níi mâi mii lûuk-kháa loei khâ
There wasn't a single customer today.
วันนี้/ wan-níi=todayไม่/ mâi=notมี/ mii=there's ("have")ลูกค้า/ lûuk-kháa=customerเลย/ loei=(at all)ค่ะ/ khâ=polite(f)

เลย/ loei=pastป้าย/ bpâai=stop ("sign")ไป/ bpai=("go")แล้ว/ láaeo=alreadyค่ะ/ khâ=polite(f)
This is the meaning everything else grew out of: to go PAST a point. Hear it that way and 'go ahead', 'not at all' and 'straight on' all stop looking like separate words.
