Food & drink: Ordering & dishes

Order like a local in any Thai restaurant or street stall. This topic covers eating out — asking for a table, ordering staples like ผัดกะเพรา (holy-basil stir-fry) and ผัดไทย (pad thai), using the right classifiers — จาน (a plate), แก้ว (a glass) — and customising your food: ไม่เผ็ดมาก (not too spicy), flagging an allergy, or asking for มังสวิรัติ (vegetarian). Its 42 sentences, recorded by native speakers and with English translations and word-by-word notes, also build the vocabulary of the five Thai tastes and how to ask for the check or a takeaway.

น้อง ('younger sibling') is how you call a waiter or shop assistant younger than you — a warm, polite way to address a stranger, not a relative. คะ (high tone) is the female question-ending, distinct from the statement ค่ะ — the tone rises before ไหม questions. Other family words are used the same way: พี่ (phîi) older sibling; ลุง (lung) uncle; ป้า (bpâa) aunt; น้า (náa) mother's younger sibling; ยาย (yaai) grandma; ตา (dtaa) grandpa. คุณ (khun) in front makes any of them more polite: คุณป้า (khun bpâa).

สั่ง/ sàng=orderข้าว/ khâao=riceเพิ่ม/ phêrm=more ("add")ได้/ dâi=canไหม/ mǎi=(question)ครับ/ khráp=polite(m)
