Moving the conversation on

Three ways of moving a conversation along — understand them by ear here. ช่างเถอะ drops the subject ("never mind, forget it"), แล้วกัน settles it ("let's just do it that way then"), and ว่าแต่ changes it altogether ("anyway…", "by the way…").

ช่างเถอะ/ châang thùh=never mind
ช่างเถอะ = 'never mind, let it go'. A complete utterance on its own, and one of the most useful two-word phrases in the language.
2 คิดมากthought about it a lot…
คิดมากแต่สุดท้ายก็ช่างเถอะค่ะ
khít mâak dtàae sùt-tháai gâw châang thùh khâ
I thought about it a lot but in the end just let it go.
คิดมาก/ khít mâak=overthinkแต่/ dtàae=butสุดท้าย/ sùt-tháai=in the endก็/ gâw=(then)ช่างเถอะ/ châang thùh=never mindค่ะ/ khâ=polite(f)
Inside a longer sentence it becomes the conclusion: thought about it, and in the end — let it go.

เอาแบบนี้แล้วกันครับ
ao bàaep níi láaeo gan khráp
Let's just do it like this then.
เอา/ ao=takeแบบ/ bàaep=like ("type")นี้/ níi=thisแล้วกัน/ láaeo gan=(let's just)ครับ/ khráp=polite(m)
แล้วกัน closes a decision casually: 'let's just do it this way then'. It settles the matter without making a formal proposal of it.
4 ปล่อยไปleave it…
งั้นก็ปล่อยไปแล้วกัน
ngán gâw bplòi bpai láaeo gan
In that case, let's just leave it.
งั้น/ ngán=in that caseก็/ gâw=(then)ปล่อย/ bplòi=releaseไป/ bpai=("go")แล้วกัน/ láaeo gan=(let's just)
งั้นก็ … แล้วกัน is 'in that case, let's just…' — the usual way to wrap things up after a problem.
5 ไปเที่ยวtrip…
ว่าแต่ ไปเที่ยวมาเป็นยังไงบ้างครับ

Anyway, how was your trip?
ว่าแต่/ wâa dtàae=by the wayไป/ bpai=goเที่ยว/ thîao=travelมา/ maa=(and come back)เป็นยังไงบ้าง/ bpen yang-ngai bâang=how is itครับ/ khráp=polite(m)
ว่าแต่ opens a change of subject: 'anyway…', 'by the way…'. It sits at the very front and belongs to the whole sentence, not to any word in it.

By the way, have you eaten yet?
